Cooperation between schools andhigher educational establishments isbecoming an increasingly important methodological work, retraining of staffthrough organization of advanced teachertraining courses at the universities, andcareer guidance: holding open days at theuniversities, which include discussionsabout the university and areas oftraining, lectures and tours, and invitingschoolchildren to the university events.

  Popularizing science among childrenand adolescents is the process ofconveying scientific knowledge inaccessible and engaging manner. Forexample, during a field trip led bysupervising teachers, pupils from manysecondary schools across the country,including the A.S. Pushkin Turkmen-Russian Secondary ComprehensiveSchool, visited Turkmen StateUniversity named after Magtymguly. The schoolchildren visit the GeologicalMuseum, which operates at theFaculty of Geography, where extensiveeducational work is carried out amongstudents and schoolchildren. Theseexcursions provide a unique opportunityto immerse themselves in the fascinatingworld of geology and paleontology.

  At the beginning of the tour, instructorsof the Geography Department conduct acareer-guidance talk about the history ofthe university, its faculties, departments,and the main areas of professionaltraining for specialists, bachelors, andmasters. It is very informative for thepupils to learn about the outstandingfigures of their time after whom theuniversity was named. The pupilsalso get interesting information about collaboration of our university withinternational research centres in othercountries.

  During the tour, schoolchildren learnabout the country’s subsurface resources,historical and general geology, andendogenous and exogenous processesoccurring within the Earth’s subsurfaceand on its surface. Furthermore, themuseum features a wide range of naturalmonuments in Koytendag – picturesquegorges, waterfalls, botanical andlandscape monuments. The dioramashelp familiarize pupils with such naturalobjects as karst caves, distinguished bya variety of dripstone formations andunusual mineral forms like stalactitesand"stone flower"stalagmites.

  A unique natural sight – the DinosaurPlateau, with 650 ancient reptilefootprints, is also presented here in theform of a full-scale model of the area.The"Jurassic Park"model displays allthe main dinosaur species of the Jurassicperiod.

The main natural attractions ofWestern Turkmenistan are its activemud volcanoes. Some of themresemble genuine magmatic volcanoes(Akpatlavuk, Gokpatlavuk) and arelandscape-geological natural monumentsof the global significance. One of thelargest mud volcanoes is Boyadag–"Mountain of Colours". The geologicalmuseum displays this volcano as acolourful, full-size model. The large-scale topographic maps and photographswere used to create it. The dioramaprovides a complete, realistic picture ofthe volcano’s structure.

  The Garabogazgol Bay is a uniquenatural sight. This vast, shallowsaltwater lagoon, surrounded by desert areas, is the richest natural laboratory forhydromineral raw materials needed forthe chemical industry.

This is an excellent example ofcollaboration between educationalinstitutions and an opportunityfor schoolchildren to deepen theirknowledge, including in the field ofgeology. Such events not only foster aninterest in science but also provide hands-on opportunities to observe geologicalsamples and gain a comprehensiveunderstanding of the country’s mineralwealth, rock formations, and naturalattractions of Turkmenistan.

Excursions to the Geological Museumare not just a fascinating journey andactivity, but also an important part ofcareer guidance, helping schoolchildrenfrom elementary school understand thevarious sciences and professions andhow they are interconnected.
